This cake was one of 2 I made to celebrate my Nana's 90th Birthday. The purpose of this one was to visit her yoga group (she's been going for 20 odd years) so she could celebrate with her friends.
My idea was to have this cake as a fun cake and the other one for our family party more formal and classic.
First thing I did was to make my Nana figure in a yoga pose. I think I remembered her wearing a purple 'leisure suit' to yoga at one stage so lilac gum paste seemed perfect. I made her grey hair using a garlic press.
The cake had to be vanilla as she can't eat chocolate. I started with the idea of just a buttercream covered cake but it just didn't have enough pizzazz so I ended up adding a light green fondant to the board and the cake. I still need to perfect covering a board. I end up with joins on the side as I can't get strips long enough to go all the way around. More practice required.
I wanted to add in Nana's love of the crows so a scarf seemed to be a good way. I cut out strips using my Wilton ribbon cutter. Was worried they'd start to dry out as I was completing all the colours and would be harder to get onto the cake, but it wasn't too bad.
The final product wasn't exactly what I imagined but it still looked alright. The end of the scarf really helped to finish it off.
The yoga mat was imprinted using a kitchen gripper.
I added sparklers and text and just before I left I stuck a Crows badge on the cake with piping gel. I could have had this made to be edible but I didn't have time so this was just a paper badge.
The ladies all loved the cake and most of all Nana got more than she ever expected.
